Pan-Africanism, Globalization, and the Future of African Universities

This advanced, culminating course takes participants from the internal transformation of the African university — epistemologies, decolonisation, curriculum, research, institutions, and leadership (AFK401–406) — outward to the university's place in the wider world. It examines Pan-Africanism as a political and intellectual project, the forces of globalization reshaping higher education, and the strategic futures available to African universities, enabling participants to envision and build institutions that are globally engaged yet sovereign, excellent yet indigenous, and that serve African development and the African renaissance. It is the synthesis and forward projection of the entire AFK series and, with AFK405 and AFK406, completes the Certificate in Institutional Innovation and Reform Leadership.

Course Overview

AFK407 is the seventh and summit course of the caakit AFK series. Building on the epistemologies (AFK401), decolonisation (AFK402), curriculum (AFK403), research (AFK404), institutional reform (AFK405), and ethical leadership (AFK406) established in the series, it takes participants outward from the internal transformation of the African university to the university's place in the wider world. It examines Pan-Africanism as a political and intellectual project, the forces of globalization reshaping higher education, and the strategic futures available to African universities — enabling participants to envision and build institutions that are globally engaged yet sovereign, excellent yet indigenous, and that serve African development and the African renaissance. It is deliberately distinct from generic globalization and international-education courses through its Pan-Africanist and Afrofuturist-renaissance lens, and with AFK405 and AFK406 it completes the Certificate in Institutional Innovation and Reform Leadership.

ASSESSMENT TYPE

Continuous Assessment & Practical Portfolio

Assessment is portfolio-based and strategic, oriented to the university's place in the world. Participants complete a Pan-African analysis of a contemporary higher-education challenge (20%), a globalization-and-sovereignty strategy paper (25%), a research-capacity and partnership-brokering design (25%), and a consolidated capstone strategic vision and action plan for a future-facing African university, presented and defended (30%). Assessment is authentic, strategic, and Pan-Africanist, prioritising demonstrated capacity to envision and build globally engaged yet sovereign African institutions.

Curricular Competencies

What You Will Master

  • Synthesise the AFK series — epistemologies, decolonisation, curriculum, research, institutions, leadership — and project it outward to the global and continental context
  • Explain the intellectual history of Pan-Africanism and its thinkers, congresses, and movements, and its bearing on higher education
  • Trace the institutional evolution from Nkrumah's vision through the OAU, AU, Agenda 2063, and the AfCFTA, and analyse their implications for higher education
  • Analyse global university rankings and internationalisation as forces of academic neocolonialism and dependency, and devise strategies to engage them on African terms
  • Analyse brain drain and circulation, transnational education, and donor agendas, and design sovereignty safeguards
  • Assess the digital and AI transformation of African higher education — its promise, divides, and data-sovereignty risks — aligned to human-centred African values
  • Articulate epistemic sovereignty and the African university as a primary site of African knowledge production and a driver of development
  • Design transnational and Africa-Africa partnerships that co-create knowledge and strengthen the African renaissance
  • Envision and defend a strategic future for an African university, integrating Agenda 2063, the AfCFTA, continental integration, and the whole AFK synthesis into an Afrofuturist and renaissance model
Curriculum Structure

4 Modules

01

The Pan-African Inheritance and the Continental Project

This module positions AFK407 as the summit and synthesis of the AFK series, turning outward from the internal transformation of the African university to its global and continental context through a distinctly Pan-Africanist and Afrofuturist-renaissance lens. Participants study the intellectual history of Pan-Africanism — its thinkers (Du Bois, Garvey, Padmore, C.L.R. James, Nkrumah, Césaire, Senghor, Fanon, Nyerere), congresses, and movements — and trace the institutional evolution from Nkrumah's vision through the OAU, AU, Agenda 2063, the AfCFTA, CESA, and the African Continental Qualifications Framework.

02

Globalization and Its Pressures on African Higher Education

This module analyses the forces of globalization pressing on African higher education and builds strategies for engaging them on African terms. Participants study global university rankings and the methodological biases and effects that can constitute academic neocolonialism; brain drain and its transformation into brain circulation, transnational education, and donor agendas, with sovereignty safeguards; and the digital and AI transformation of African higher education — its promise, digital divides, and data-sovereignty risks — aligned to human-centred African values.

The African University in the Global Knowledge Economy and the African Renaissance

This module develops the conditions of African sovereignty and contribution in the global knowledge economy. Participants articulate epistemic sovereignty and the African university as the primary site of African knowledge production (Ndlovu-Gatsheni, Mamdani, Assié-Lumumba, Zeleza), building doctoral and research capacity and African-centred research agendas that drive development; and design transnational and Africa-Africa partnerships — Pan-African University, CODESRIA, the AAU, ACQF — that co-create knowledge and strengthen the African renaissance, guided by the ethics of AFK405 and AFK406.

Strategic Futures and the African University

This culminating module projects the African university into the future. Participants envision the African university of 2063 and beyond — globally engaged yet sovereign, excellent yet indigenous — through Afrofuturist and renaissance models of African futurity; and consolidate the entire AFK synthesis into the capstone strategic vision and action plan for a future-facing African university, presented and defended, integrating Agenda 2063, the AfCFTA, continental integration, and the whole series.
