Designing Effective Assessments in Higher Education
A practical, evidence-informed mini-course for academic faculty, lecturers, and educators in higher education. This course takes you from the foundational principles of assessment—why assessment drives learning through the backwash effect, and how validity, reliability, and fairness shape quality—through to the practical craft of designing authentic tasks, building analytic and holistic rubrics, and embedding feedback and continuous-improvement cycles. You will apply Biggs's constructive alignment to link learning outcomes, teaching activities, and assessment tasks, distinguish formative from summative assessment, and design assessment FOR learning. By the end, you will be equipped to design assessments that are valid, reliable, fair, authentic, and improved over time—and to evaluate them with evidence. Includes rubrics, Mermaid diagrams, and interactive practice throughout, culminating in 12 CPD credits.
This mini-course equips higher-education faculty to design, evaluate, and continuously improve assessments. Module 1 builds the conceptual foundation: the purposes of assessment (of, for, and as learning), the quality criteria (validity, reliability, fairness), constructive alignment, and the formative/summative distinction. Module 2 moves to craft: designing authentic tasks, building effective rubrics, and embedding feedback plus an evidence-based continuous-improvement cycle.
Instruction & Evaluation
Online / Asynchronous (Self-Paced with Faculty Mentorship)
Self-paced modular instruction with continuous continental access via the CAA Member Portal, supplemented by faculty moderation.
Continuous Assessment & Practical Portfolio
Each lesson includes interactive knowledge checks (quizzes, reflection, flashcards, matching, and scenario-based decision making). A culminating portfolio task invites faculty to design, rubric, and evaluate one of their own assessments, applying constructive alignment, quality criteria, and a continuous-improvement plan.
What You Will Master
- Explain and apply the core quality criteria of assessment—validity, reliability, and fairness—and diagnose common threats to each.
- Apply constructive alignment to design assessments whose tasks, criteria, and outcomes are tightly linked.
- Distinguish formative and summative assessment and design assessment FOR learning experiences.
- Design authentic, real-world assessment tasks requiring higher-order thinking and meaningful outputs.
- Construct analytic and holistic rubrics with clearly differentiated performance descriptors.
- Plan an evidence-based evaluation and continuous-improvement cycle for an assessment.
