A practice-focused course that builds the financial literacy and resource-mobilization competence of senior academics, heads of department, deans, directors, senate/council members, and academic administrators responsible for budgets, resource allocation, fundraising, and financial accountability. It covers the foundations of university financial management, strategic budgeting and cost management, resource mobilization and funding diversification (including grants, philanthropy, and partnerships), and rigorous financial accountability, internal control, and audit. Anchored in African higher-education funding realities, the course completes the Certificate in Academic Leadership and Governance.

Self-paced modular instruction with continuous continental access via the CAA Member Portal, supplemented by faculty moderation.
Continuous Assessment & Practical Portfolio
Continuous Assessment (30%) — budgeting, funding, and accountability case studies and applied exercises (evidence-verified per the CAA CPD verification convention). Participation & Professional Conduct (30%) — seminar and scenario engagement. Capstone Reflective Assessment (40%) — a Financial Sustainability Plan (800–1,200 words) for the participant's department/unit or institution, comprising a strategic budget approach, a resource-mobilization/diversification strategy, and an accountability and internal-control framework. Credential: Certificate of Completion in Financial Management and Resource Mobilization in Academia (3 CPD credits).

Foundations of Financial Management in Higher Education
Establishes the financial literacy academic leaders need. Introduces the principles of public/university financial management, accounting concepts and financial statements, and the distinctive nature of the university as a non-profit educational entity. Clarifies roles of academic leaders vs. finance, situates financial governance, and orients to fiscal sustainability and African funding realities.

Budgeting, Financial Planning, and Cost Management
Develops the practical craft of budgeting. Teaches the budget as a strategic instrument, the various budget types and processes, cost concepts, cost-centre and departmental budgeting, forecasting, variance, monitoring, and managing deficits and constraints — showing how budgets fund strategy.

Resource Mobilization, Funding Diversification, and Grants
Develops the outward-facing competence of the funding-sustaining academic leader. Teaches strategic resource mobilization and funding diversification, plus the full grant lifecycle — identification, proposal writing, budgeting, compliance, management, and donor reporting.

Addresses the fiduciary and ethical foundation of academic finance. Teaches accountability and stewardship, internal controls and segregation of duties, procurement and asset management, and financial transparency. Covers audit and the audit committee, fraud, corruption, and ethics, and risk management and the academic leader's fiduciary duty.
