Grant Proposal Writing and Funding Acquisition
This practice-intensive course equips African academics, researchers, postgraduate students, and research supervisors with the strategic and technical craft of converting rigorous research designs into fundable proposals. Learners master the full funding lifecycle — from mapping national, continental, and international funders to building theories of change, defensible budgets, equitable partnerships, and compliant submissions — all grounded in the realities and opportunities of African higher education.

Instruction & Evaluation
Online / Asynchronous (Self-Paced with Faculty Mentorship)
Self-paced modular instruction with continuous continental access via the CAA Member Portal, supplemented by faculty moderation.
Continuous Assessment & Practical Portfolio
8 auto-graded formative quizzes (one per module); a staged practical capstone portfolio (60%) built across the course — funder intelligence brief, call dissection, ToC/logic model with M&E indicators, full proposal narrative, justified budget, submission-compliance dossier; peer review exercise (10%); reflective submission (10%) on African-led research agendas and knowledge sovereignty; final integrative assessment (20%) — timed respond-to-reviewer-comments task.
What You Will Master
- Map and critically analyze the African research funding ecosystem (national, continental, and international funders, instruments, and cycles) and produce a personalized funder intelligence portfolio aligned with an African-led research agenda.
- Deconstruct live calls for proposals (RFPs/RFAs) — eligibility, compliance, scoring criteria, budget ceilings, and hidden expectations — and translate an RKI 102 research design into compliant, compelling proposal components.
- Design a theory of change, logic model, and monitoring and evaluation framework with SMART objectives, assumptions, risks, deliverables, and sustainability strategies.
- Write persuasive, audience-aware proposal narrative (abstract, problem statement, significance, methodology, dissemination) that passes the 'so what' test for scientists, program officers, and donor leadership.
- Construct transparent, defensible budgets and budget justifications — direct and indirect costs, salary projections, exchange-rate and inflation treatment, cost-share — that withstand reviewer and auditor scrutiny.
- Formulate equitable partnership and consortium strategies (roles, governance, sub-awards, IP/data sharing) and execute compliant submission, review-response, and revise-and-resubmit workflows, including ethics and institutional sign-off.
8 Modules
The African Research Funding Ecosystem
Foundational module: the political economy of research funding in Africa, grant instruments and funding cycles, donor dependence, the Africanization agenda, and practical funder mapping plus intelligence-building across national, continental, and international funders.
2 Lessons
From Research Design to Fundable Proposal
The anatomy of fundable proposals, reviewer psychology and scoring rubrics, the golden thread, and disciplined deconstruction of calls for proposals (EOI vs full proposal, eligibility, compliance, budget ceilings, go/no-go).
2 Lessons
Logic Models and Theories of Change
Causal-chain planning: theory of change vs logic model, assumptions and risks, SMART objectives, M&E frameworks with indicators/baselines/targets, workplans and Gantt charts, sustainability, exit strategies, and gender/inclusivity integration.
2 Lessons
Writing for Funder Audiences
Persuasive, audience-aware proposal prose: audience analysis, plain-English scientific writing, storytelling with evidence, the so-what test, and writing each proposal section to standard from abstract to dissemination plan.
2 Lessons
Budgets and Cost Justification
Constructing transparent, defensible budgets: direct and indirect costs, overhead policies, effort percentages, exchange-rate and inflation treatment, budget ceilings, cost-share, budget justifications, and financial stewardship through to audit-readiness.
2 Lessons
Partnerships, Consortia, and Equitable Collaboration
Designing equitable research partnerships and consortia: North–South power dynamics, parachute-research critique, African leadership, South–South assets, governance structures, sub-awards, letters of support, data/IP ownership, and authorship policies.
2 Lessons
Ethics, Compliance, and Institutional Readiness
Research ethics in grant proposals (ethics sections, funder-specific appraisal, Nagoya Protocol, AI/genomics ethics), and the research office workflow — institutional sign-offs, internal cut-off dates, national regulations (POPIA, data protection), conflict of interest, and pre-award administration.
2 Lessons
Submission Strategy, Review, and the Grant Lifecycle
Submission strategy and portals, submission checklists and technical failure modes, mock panel backstopping, timing strategy, the full review cycle — decoding reviewer comments, rejection→revision→resubmission, response-to-reviewers, award negotiation, and handoff to RKI 106.
